ABOUT

From the bacterial to the humane, Nature Exists Laughing explores the intimate relationship of creation and destruction, spanning myth, millennia and the mothering of the cosmic. With word-play and witch-like incantations, Haley Jenkins exposes the lore and life underneath the everyday and the voices list in the history of extinction events and human force – presented in museums, surreal cliffsides, in the hidden lives of roots, in the hungry mouths of neon gods. We are all living in a cycle, at the knee of Nature, who laughs and laughs and laughs.

Haley Jenkins is an experimental poet currently residing in Surrey, UK. She has published two books – Nekorb (Veer Books, 2017) and Colourbast Blues (Ghost City Press, 2022) – and her work has appeared in publications such as painted spoken, Tears in the Fence, The Journal of British and Irish Experimental Poetry,  Strukturriss, New Note Poetry, Cutbow Quarterly, Streetcake, The National Poetry Library and many others.

FROM HALEY JENKINS

“These poems were always designed to stand out from the traditional nature poems I encountered as a child, I didn’t want flowers and a motherly green woman, as much as I enjoy and respect them in poetry and art. I wanted anger and surrealism, I wanted a retelling of time and to encapsulate the change I had experienced over the decades of my life: climate change, environmental disasters,  humans damaging what should be sacred, humans destroying each other, the shadow of history whispering promises of repeat. I am a witness in a crowd of witnesses for sure. Nature is a character in this book, she sits within each page and she laughs, often with tears, sometimes with hope, always with fascination and power.”
